Obituary for Gloria Jean Gaskin

We celebrate the life of Gloria Jean Gaskin, a woman who expertly exhibited the true meaning of strength, love, and faith. A woman who inspired everyone she met with her God-fearing attitude and vibrant personality. She could always be seen cooking for her family or writing in her journal. As a former educator, she always encouraged education among her children and grandchildren. She was a brave social justice advocate, participating in several Civil Rights initiatives, encouraging others to strive for change.

Born on September 14, 1947, Gloria was the second child born to the late Joseph and Ruby Marshall. She transitioned from her earthly body into Heaven on June 8, 2017. Gloria received Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Mercy Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Johnny Hollis, where she sang in the Mercy Mass Choir. Gloria was united in holy matrimony to Jerry Gaskin Sr. on December 11, 1966. To this union, four sons were born. Jerry preceded her in death on March 21, 2011.

Gloria’s early childhood and high school education was completed at Fews Elementary and Carver High School, class of 1964. She graduated from Alabama State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education. She then graduated from Auburn University Montgomery with a Master’s degree in Education.

Her love for education lead her to work 30 years in Elmore County where she taught sixth and third grade. She was a Title I reading and math specialist. She loved education so much that upon her retirement, she wanted to give back and went to work for the Montgomery East Head Start Program and First Foundation. She was also a presenter at the National Reading Mega Conference. She instilled pride in her students and always encouraged them to do their best.

Being a mother of four boys, her most prized possessions were her granddaughters. She was blessed with four and played a major role in their lives. In between spontaneous lunch dates and sleepovers, she instilled knowledge and motivation in their minds to be strong young women and lead their lives with confidence. She was infamously known for always asking if they “completed their lesson” and encouraged them to be well-read, preparing them for life.

Gloria loved her family and friends. She spent her life making sure every person felt loved and supported. Her years as an educator helped to shape and strengthen the minds of our youth. She could always be seen with a bright smile and was truly an angel on Earth. Although Heaven could not wait, her life and legacy will continue to be admired and shared.

Cherishing her memories are four loving sons, Jerry Gaskin Sr., Daran (Christy) Gaskin Sr., Quinton (Tammie) Gaskin Sr., all of Montgomery, AL, Ricardo (Alexis) Gaskin Sr., of Charlotte, North Carolina, one step-son Lonnie Russel, of Atlanta, GA, eight grandchildren, Daran Gaskin Jr., Carington Gaskin, Chandler Gaskin, Quinton Gaskin Jr., De’Aries Scroggins, Jordyn Bray, Kaedence Martin, and Ricardo Gaskin Jr., two siblings, Joseph (Eliza) Marshall, of Montgomery, AL, and Robert (Cynthia) Marshall, of Orlando, FL, one sister-in-law Annie Gregory, of Montgomery, AL, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
