Dr. James Oliviere

Dr. James Oliviere was one of five children born to the late Prince and Rosetta Oliviere, both of whom preceded him in death. He was born and raised in Santa Flora, Trinidad, West Indies. He accepted Christ at an early age and attended St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church in Los Bajos. He attended Quarry Presbyterian School in the Quarry Village and then a commercial school in Siparia.
After high school he came to the United States and attended Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri where he received his bachelors of science degree. While in college, he joined the Alpha Psi chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. From there, he attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he earned both, his masters and doctoral degrees in microbiology.
Upon graduation, he moved to Montgomery, AL and became a professor at Alabama State University. It was at this time he met Ms. Carolyn Boyd, the love of his life. They married in 1970 and with this union had one son, James. While at Alabama State, he taught various classes in the biology department for over 40 years and also served as chairman for several of those years. He was affectionately known by many of the students and faculty members as, “Dr. O.” He had a strong passion for teaching and a desire to ensure that all of his students were well-prepared to pursue any career in the sciences. Many of his former students have become teachers, scientists, professors, dentists, and medical doctors. He retired in 2006 from the institution. He eventually departed this life peacefully at home on February 28, 2015.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters (Mamrie and Agnes) and also his youngest brother (Joseph). He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife and life partner (Carolyn), a son (James), a daughter-in-law (Gabriele), a brother (John), a sister (Rebecca), 3 grandchildren, and a host of relatives, friends and former students.
