Ellen Matthews Morse was born the first child of George and Ophelia Matthews (both deceased) on September 3, 1922. She received Christ at an early age under the leadership of Rev. W. A. Steward at Old Ship AME Zion Church.
Ellen completed high school at the Alabama State Normal High and after graduation moved to Cleveland. Ohio. She met and married Willard Morse on October 23, 1971. After a stay in Ohio, Ellen moved to Buffalo, New York where she joined and was a devoted member of Bethel AME Church. She was a member of the Daughters of Isis where she served in many leadership positions.
In 2010, Ellen returned to Montgomery, AL and reunited with the Old Ship AME Zion Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Kathy McFadden and remained a faithful member until her illness. Ellen heard the Master’s call on Saturday, November 14, 2015 and obediently answered the call to relocate to her new home.
Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Morse; one son, James Roland Matthews; brothers, George, Frank, Thomas, James, and Arthur Matthews. Ellen’s memories will be forever cherished by her son, William H. Sloan of Oakland, CA; sisters, Alice A. Avery, Ophelia D. Jackson, Dorothy H. Satchell; two brothers, Allen Matthews of Cleveland, OH, and Leon Matthews of Montgomery, AL; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
